Welcome to my website. Here you will find summaries of my work, papers to download, and links to pursue.

I have three main areas of interest that are reflective of rather disparate and evolving identities, namely scholarship, fitness, and fiction.

A full-time academic since 1987, I am currently a senior lecturer in human geography at Newcastle University, in the School of Geography, Politics and Sociology. My specialist area is international development and change, which (reflecting its multi-disciplinary character) I have taught in departments of politics and international relations as well as geography. A full CV/resume is available here.

I became interested in teaching fitness while still an assistant professor of political science at Williams College in the United States. After teaching aerobics and step for a number of years, I have gradually added Boxercise, Modern Pilates, Fitness Pilates and Freestyle Fitness Yoga to my repertoire of classes.

The move from academic writing to fiction came after I joined a creative writing group for ‘tired and busy academics’ run by the late Julia Darling at Newcastle University. I shared with her an idea I had for a novel; she encouraged me enthusiastically; and the rest, as they say, is history. My finished novel, Starting a New Season, was published by Pen Press in 2005 – a couple of months after Julia’s untimely death from breast cancer. I think of her often, and (while keeping my hand in with an occasional short story) plan to write another novel one day.

Meanwhile, I remain an active academic and fitness professional.
